British dramatic mezzo-soprano Sarah-Jane Lewis is establishing herself as a compelling interpreter of dramatic repertoire, with a voice distinguished by its richness, power and dramatic intensity.

In 2024, she was awarded Second Prize at the New York Wagner Competition, marking an important development in her move into dramatic mezzo-soprano repertoire and reflecting her growing affinity with the Wagnerian repertoire.

Her current repertoire includes Eboli in Don Carlo, Amneris in Aida, Carmen, Dalila in Samson et Dalila and La Zia Principessa in Suor Angelica. Her developing Wagner repertoire includes Erda in Das Rheingold and Siegfried and Waltraute in Götterdämmerung, with Fricka in Die Walküre and Kundry in Parsifal among the roles she is preparing for the longer term.

Lewis has appeared with English National Opera in Porgy and Bess as part of the company’s Olivier Award-winning production. Her operatic experience spans repertoire by Purcell, Verdi, Puccini, Strauss and Wagner. Earlier in her career, as a soprano, her roles included Giorgetta in Il tabarro, Dido in Dido and Aeneas and La Marchesa del Poggio in Un giorno di regno.

She trained at the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music before completing her studies at the National Opera Studio. She subsequently became a Link Artist at the Royal Opera House and a Jerwood Young Artist at Glyndebourne Festival Opera.

Following an earlier career in soprano repertoire, Lewis has undertaken a considered transition into dramatic mezzo-soprano repertoire. Her combination of vocal weight, range and dramatic presence now points towards the major dramatic mezzo roles of Verdi and the French repertoire, alongside an increasing focus on Wagner.
