James Schouten, tenor

Dutch Canadian tenor James Schouten grew up in the United Kingdom and trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s Alexander Gibson Opera School, the Royal College of Music, and Goldsmiths, University of London.

His repertoire ranges from Mozart and Strauss through Wagner and twentieth century opera. Roles performed include Loge in Das Rheingold, Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos, Don José in Carmen, Laca in Jenůfa, and Le Prince Charmant in Cendrillon.

Recent engagements include Narraboth in Salome with Regents Opera, Froh in Das Rheingold with Grange Park Opera, and Federico in Ed Lambert’s In Five Years’ Time in London. He also appears as Boris in Káťa Kabanová with New Palace Opera and prepares the title role in Parsifal for Regents Opera.

His portrayal of Loge in Das Rheingold received wide critical response. Bachtrack described the performance as “a real thrill to behold”, while Seen and Heard International praised “as complete a performance as I can recall on any stage”.

Schouten’s competition successes include First Prize and Audience Prize at the Carole Rees Mastersingers Competition, First Prize at the Ye Cronies Opera Competition, and finalist positions at the Clonter Opera Prize and the Marmo all’Opera Competition.

He studies with Richard Berkley Steele and previously worked with Stephen Robertson and Timothy Evans Jones.
