Deborah Humble | Mezzo Soprano

British-Australian mezzo-soprano Deborah Humble is internationally recognised as a leading interpreter of the dramatic and Wagnerian repertoire.

Recent highlights include Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra conducted by Simone Young, recorded for Deutsche Grammophon, with Nicole Car as soprano. In the 2026 season she returns to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, including appearances as Waltraute in Götterdämmerung under Simone Young. Further engagements include Verdi’s Requiem with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. She also appears with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Canberra Symphony Orchestra.

A central focus of her work is the Wagner repertoire. In Der Ring des Nibelungen she has performed Erda and Waltraute extensively, including three complete cycles with Melbourne Opera. She has also sung these roles for Opera Australia and has recently added Fricka to her repertoire. International engagements include Erda in Siegfried with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and Halle Opera, as well as in Das Rheingold with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and Saffron Opera Group. As Waltraute, she has appeared in Götterdämmerung with Saffron Opera Group and in complete cycles in Bari and Ludwigshafen. At Hamburg State Opera she has performed Erda, Waltraute and Schwertleite, and has sung Waltraute in Die Walküre with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

In Australia her roles include Amneris in Aida and Brigitta in Die tote Stadt for Opera Australia, and Dalila in Samson et Dalila and Magdalena in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg for Melbourne Opera. In concert she has performed the Princess in Suor Angelica, as well as Clairon in Capriccio and Klytemnestra in Elektra for Victorian Opera. Internationally, engagements include Mary in Der fliegende Holländer at Opéra de Lille and Hamburg State Opera, Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel, Olga in Eugene Onegin, and Alisa in Lucia di Lammermoor for Hamburg State Opera and Teatro Mario del Monaco. She has also performed Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde with the Mexico City Symphony Orchestra and Brigitta in Die tote Stadt with the Auckland Symphony Orchestra. Recent role debuts include Herodias in Salome (Regents Opera, London).

A sought-after concert soloist, her repertoire includes Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and performances at Singapore’s Esplanade Theatre, Schoenberg’s Gurre-Lieder with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Verdi’s Requiem at Sage Gateshead and with Orchestra Wellington, Elgar’s The Kingdom with Melbourne Bach Choir, Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Handel’s Messiah with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder with Orchestra Wellington.

Her recordings include The Love for Three Oranges (Opera Australia, Chandos, conducted by Richard Hickox), and Der Ring des Nibelungen with Hamburg State Opera (Oehms, conducted by Simone Young) and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (Naxos, conducted by Jaap van Zweden).

She has received critical acclaim and a Green Room Award nomination for her performances as Klytemnestra in Elektra (Victorian Opera) and as Erda and Waltraute in Der Ring des Nibelungen (Melbourne Opera).
