“Mendelssohn’s D major Sonata was totally convincing, the Adagio in particular being beautifully lyrical. A light and well-defined opening characterised the Scherzo, and the finale was both exciting and technically flawless.” – The Strad (Wigmore Hall)
Hailed as a “consummate master of the bow” by The Strad magazine, Chinese-Australian cellist Yelian He has performed in almost all of UK and Australia’s well known venues. He has most recently appeared in concert at venues and festivals such as Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Bridgewater Concert Hall, City Recital Hall, Melbourne Recital Centre, Hamer Hall, Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Brighton Festival, Deal Festival, Adelaide International Cello Festival and Woodend Winter Arts Festival.
In 2011, Yelian performed Haydn’s D major Concerto with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra to great acclaim at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting Opening Concert in Perth, Australia. Reviews likened him to a “race car driver…with all the elegance and verve, finding himself in a Viennese parterre”. His latest collaboration was C.P.E. Bach’s Cello Concerto in A major with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at their spectacular City Recital Hall in Angel Place. (http://heplayscello.com/sydney-symphony-orchestra/)
“Featured Chinese-born cellist Yelian He… (has a) big personality, strong playing and intense vibrato”
Yelian won the inaugural 2014 Australian Cello Awards in Sydney; picking up the Grand Prize, Audience Prize as well as a host of other awards. In 2009 he won the Royal Over-Seas League String Competition in London.
As an artist, Yelian is a keen observer to the way the world changes, and is constantly finding ways to bring joy to the audience. He has just released several videos of short, exciting works and is currently working on more video ideas for people to enjoy on the move, or at home.
Yelian studies Wing Chun, a style of Chinese Kung Fu made popular by Bruce Lee and the recent releases of the box office blockbuster “Ip Man” movies. In his spare time, Yelian also cooks, is a passionate film fan of anything from action, comedy to horror as well as a sound engineer enthusiast.
Yelian was presented to Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II in 2011 at a reception for outstanding Australians in the UK and again in 2013 in a private performance for the Queen and her Commonwealth guests at Buckingham Palace.
2016 sees Yelian performing at Brighton and Deal Festivals, Manchester Cathedral as well as with his pianist Yasmin and ex-Concertmaster of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Wilma Smith in a piano trio tour in Australia.
He’s Cello is currently 138 years old – crafted by Hungarian luthier Adolphus Monnig in 1877.
