James Hancock, Director, is a former professional opera singer with international performing experience and extensive knowledge of the classical music industry. Born in Melbourne and trained at the Victorian College of the Arts, he began his career as a Victoria State Opera Young Artist and toured Australia in the musical Bran Nue Dae.
As the recipient of the Opera Foundation Australia German Operatic Award he joined the Opera Studio of Oper Köln. His operatic appearances included Siegfried and Parsifal, Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos, and performances with companies including Pocket Opera Nürnberg in Der Ring in einem Abend, and the role of Bill in Maschinist Hopkins by Max Brand at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.
He later returned to the baritone repertoire, singing the Dutchman at the Barbican and appearing as Rigoletto, Count di Luna, Don Pizarro and Simon Boccanegra with Opera UK.
In 2008 he founded London Lyric Opera, producing concert opera performances at venues including the Barbican and Cadogan Hall with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
In 2013 he assumed responsibility for the administration of the Tait Memorial Trust. The Trust presents several concerts each year and provides financial support to emerging artists from Australia and New Zealand who wish to study or work in the United Kingdom. To date it has distributed more than £1.5 million in awards.
In 2025 he served as General Manager of Oxenfoord International Summer School, overseeing planning, budgeting and delivery of the residential course at the University of St Andrews. His work was instrumental in securing the successful inaugural course at St Andrews.
